Oct. 18, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – The campus of Pepperdine University became a hub of collegiate tennis today, as 12 teams converged in Malibu for the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship. Three different Waves went undefeated in singles play to advance to the round of 32, which resumes tomorrow.
The day began with one round of doubles. Two Pepperdine pairs were in action in the round of 64, with David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) and Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) putting away an 8-4 decision vs. Ben Collomb and Alex Roggenkamp of Grand Canyon.
In singles, Sarkissian, Menichella and Sofaer all won to make it past today’s first two rounds.
Sarkissian, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, made short work of his match versus San Diego State’s Hendrik Jebens, wining 6-1, 6-2.
Menichella also won in straight sets, dispatching Danilo Casanova to the consolation bracket with a 7-6, 6-0 triumph.
In one of the final matches of the day, Sofaer rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the first to beat Raphael Davidian 6-3, 6-0. He’ll face USC’s Johnny Wang, ranked #63, tomorrow.
Although Alexander Solonin (Tarzana, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) won in his collegiate debut 6-4, 6-0, the freshman fell in the second round to a ranked opponent.
