Men's Tennis Wraps Action at Battle in the Bay Classic
Oct. 14, 2012
SAN FRANCISCO – Kento Tanaka-Tamaki and David Sofaer of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team competed over three days at the Battle in the Bay Classic, held at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco. Tanaka-Tamaki earned his first win of the season to highlight the weekend.
Although Tanaka-Tamaki (Kihei, Hawaii/St. Anthony Junior-Senior HS) suffered a narrow three-set loss in the tiebreaker on the opening day, he rebounded in the consolation round. The sophomore Wave traded sets with JP Boyd of West Coast Conference rival San Diego, before emerging on top 10-8 in the third set tiebreaker.
Tanaka-Tamaki later suffered defeat to Cal Poly’s Matt Thomson to finish 1-2 in singles on the weekend.
Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) took Jamin Ball of Stanford to the full three sets in the first round of singles, but ultimately fell 6-2 in the final frame.
In doubles, Tanaka-Tamaki and Sofaer battled Ball and Trey Strobel game-for-game until they went to the tiebreaker after an 8-8 tie. The Cardinal duo edged the Waves 7-3.
Next up, the entire Pepperdine squad gears up for the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships, hosted by UC Irvine on Oct. 18-21.
