Freshman Menichella Reaches Consolation Finals at Battle in the Bay Classic
Oct. 13, 2013
SAN FRANCISCO – Freshman Stefan Menichella of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team made an impressive collegiate debut, working his way to the consolation finals of the Battle in the Bay Classic. Although he fell in the title match, Menichella boasts a record of 4-2 to open what promises to be a standout career as a Wave.
Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) was dispatched to the consolation draw after suffering a loss on Friday, but rebounded with four-consecutive wins – three of which were in straight sets – in the consolation bracket.
The freshman began his Sunday with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Stanford’s Nolan Paige. It was the Wave’s first win over a ranked opponent, with Paige listed at #97 in the ITA Preseason Rankings.
In the finals, he faced #104 Karue Sell, who lost to David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) in the first round to make his way to the back draw.
The match played out close, but Sell emerged with a hard found 6-3, 7-5 win to take the consolation trophy.
Next up on the Waves’ schedule is the annual USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship, held this year in Malibu at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Oct. 18-22.
