Oct. 12, 2013
SAN FRANCISCO – It was another successful day at the Battle in the Bay Classic for the Pepperdine men’s tennis team. Senior David Sofaer reached the quarterfinals of the singles draw, while freshman Stefan Menichella continues his run tomorrow in the consolation semifinals.
Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) opened the day with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 over Sem Verbeek of Pacific in the round of 16. It was his third-straight victory after winning twice in straight sets yesterday.
In the quarterfinals, Sofaer faced top-seeded and #41-ranked Campbell Johnson of California. After Johnson got on the board with a 6-1 win in the first, he narrowly edged the Wave 6-4 in set two to end Sofaer’s run at the title.
Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) continued his winning ways in the consolation bracket, winning twice today. The freshman begin his day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Boise State’s Toby Mitchell.
He found himself in the middle of an evenly-match battle against Joseph DiGiuilio of UCLA during the consolation quarterfinals. The Bruin narrowly won 6-4 in set one, but Menichella extended the match with a 7-6 set two triumph. Menichella secured the win by taking the super tiebreaker 10-7.
He will take on Nolan Paige of Stanford in tomorrow’s consolation semifinal, scheduled for 10 a.m. Follow the team or associate head coach Marcelo Ferreira on Twitter, or check back at PepperdineSports.com for results and recaps.
