Waves Run at ITA/D'Novo All-American Championships Comes to a Close
Oct. 7, 2010
TULSA, Okla. – Sebastian Fanselow and Finn Tearney’s incredible run at the ITA/D’Novo All-American Championships has come to a close. Although the duo collectively tallied seven singles wins over the past four days, the Waves bowed out today against top-ranked talent.
Fanselow (Essen, Germany) opened the day with a 6-3, 7-5 underdog victory over Marek Michalicka of Wisconsin. Fanselow entered the event ranked No. 50 on the Campbell/ITA singles rankings, while Michalicka sits at No. 19.
His next hurdle was the No. 2-ranked and 2010 ITA National Rookie of the Year Henrique Cunha of Duke. The Blue Devil remained undefeated this season with a 6-3, 6-3 win to eliminate Fanselow from the championship bracket.
The sophomore Wave is now 9-5 against ranked opponents. The highest-ranked player Fanselow has ever beaten was Texas’ Ed Corrie during the 2009-10 season, who sat at No. 12 on the poll at the time. Cunha is the only top-10 opponent Fanselow has met on the singles court.
Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand) went a perfect 3-0 in qualifying to advance to the main draw. Today he faced No. 40 James Meredith of Boise State. Tearney was unable to rebound from a narrow loss in the first frame, and made his exit from the championships in the second set.
In consolation action, Tearney took a 6-2 first-set win from Georgia’s Sadio Doumbia but could not close out the match and was defeated 6-3, 6-4.
Up next for the Waves is the ITA Southwest Regional, held in Irvine, Calif., on Oct. 21-26.
