Sarkissian Goes 1-1 on First Day of ITA All-American Championship
Oct. 3, 2013
TULSA, Okla. – Alex Sarkissian of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team rebounded from a loss in the opening round the ITA All-American Championship with an exciting three-set victory in consolation. The senior will continue to battle in the back draw tomorrow at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC), a main draw selection and ranked #23 in the preseason singles poll, faced #7-ranked Nik Scholtz of Mississippi in the opening round. The Wave put up a challenging fight, but Scholtz emerged with the victory, 6-4, 6-4.
“Alex competed extremely hard and stayed toe-to-toe with a highly ranked player,” commented associate head coach Marcelo Ferreira. “He tried to make adjustments throughout the match to expose Nik’s weaknesses, but unfortunately things didn’t fall his way today. Credit goes to Nik, who was able to dictate a lot of points, particularly when serving.”
Sarkissian bounced back in the consolation draw, winning an exciting three-set match against #28 Esben Hess-Oleson of North Carolina.
Both players took a set by a 6-2 score to set up the deciding third frame. After 12 games played and still no winner determined, Sarkissian and Hess-Oleson went to the tiebreaker. While still extremely close, Sarkissian gained the upper hand and won 7-5.
Although the remainder of Sarkissian’s matches will be in the consolation draw, there’s still a prize to be won for the last student-athlete standing. The winner of the back draw is given an automatic berth into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship in November.
Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara of the women’s tennis team won the doubles back draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship last season, and went on to reach the semifinals of the indoor national championship.
“I’m proud of how Alex played today and how he represented the University,” said Ferreira in closing.
Action at the ITA All-American Championships continues tomorrow and concludes on Sunday. Live scores and more can be found at the tournament central.
