SAN FRANCISCO – Members of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team went up against some of the best tennis players on the West Coast during day one of the Battle in the Bay Classic hosted by the University of San Francisco. Mousheg Hovhannisyan picked up a singles victory in his first appearance of the season to lead the Waves.
Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) opened his sophomore campaign with a come-from-behind triumph over Lucas Tirelli of West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary’s College. Hovhannisyan went 15-8 during his rookie season and earned WCC honorable mention accolades. He is slated to face Raymond Sarmiento, who hails from USC, on Saturday.
Jenson Turner (Woodland Hills, Calif./Campbell HS) also competed in the singles bracket, but fell to San Francisco’s Thau Tu, who holds the No. 1 seed in the tournament, 6-4, 6-4.
Both Turner and Hovhannisyan teamed up on the doubles court to face Sarmiento and JT Sundling. It was an evening matched draw, but the Waves eventually bowed out 9-7.
