Men's Tennis Picks Up Wins in Olympia Fields

Sebastian Fanselow leads Waves in season-opening tournament with two singles victories.

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The Pepperdine men’s tennis team, semifinalists at the 2012 NCAA Tournament, made its first steps towards the 2013 championships this weekend at the Olympia Fields Country Club Invitational. Four members of the squad competed for three days on green clay, and posted multiple wins in both singles and doubles.

During Friday’s opening rounds, Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep) registered his first singles win of the season with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 triumph over Illinois’ Jared Hiltzik.

The Waves’ rookie, Damian Gryzelko (London, England/Saddlebrook Prep) made his collegiate debut against Andrew Scholnick of California. After splitting sets, the freshman eventually bowed out in the superbreaker by the narrow margin of 10-7.

In doubles, Gryzelko teamed up with Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) to defeat Notre Dame’s Quentin Monaghan and Wyatt McCoy, 9-7.

On Saturday, Fanselow continued his winning ways. Although the two-time All-American dropped the first set in the tiebreaker to Gregory Bayane, Fanselow rebounded in the final two frames 6-2, 6-2.

Hovhannisyan also won, downing McCoy 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to earn his first victory of the season.

On Sunday, David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) and Gryzelko won against the Fighting Irish pair of Blas Moros and Michael Moore, 8-5.

Next up on Pepperdine’s slate is the ITA All-American Championships, once again hosted by Tulsa. Prequalification rounds being on Sept. 29, and singles and doubles winners will be crowned on Oct. 7. In addition to Fanselow and Hovhannisyan, Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) is schedule to compete.
