PALO ALTO, Calif.Sebastian Fanselow of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team highlighted the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship today, pulling off a thrilling upset over the bracket’s No. 2 seed.  Finn Tearney, the Waves’ second representative at the championships, also delivered a solid victory to advance to the second round.

Fanselow (Essen, Germany), who now has two victories versus top-10 ranked opponents this season, recovered from a first set loss versus Virginia’s Alex Domijan to win 6-4, 6-1 in the final two frames.  Overall the sophomore is 26-10 in singles this season.

"I was just trying to play my game and be as aggressive as possible. I was trying to get him moving and get him to the corners of the court,” explained Fanselow after the match. “I didn't do that as well in the first set because I was intimidated by his ground strokes, but then later I was able to execute my shots better and got him to hit a few more errors. I think that was big. To win is a great confidence booster and I am looking forward to going into the next round. I will just try to do as well as I can."

Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand), who currently ranks #43 in singles, also advanced to the second round following a three-set win against Casey Watt of Notre Dame.  Watt earned the early advantage with a 6-2 win in the first, but Tearney held on for a 7-5 win in the second set to stay alive.  With the momentum rolling in his favor, Tearney blanked Watt in the deciding frame to win his NCAA Singles Championship debut match.

Fanselow will face #19-ranked John Peers of Baylor at 11:30 a.m., while Tearney, who boasts a 27-10 record this season, battles with #4 Blaz Rola from Ohio State at 10 a.m.
