Beidas Leads Waves to 7-0 Win Over SMC on Senior Day
MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 22 Pepperdine men's tennis team won its third straight match - and seventh of its last eight - Thursday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center following a 7-0 victory over West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary's College.
The win lifted the Waves' overall record to 13-10 and 2-0 vs. the WCC, while the Gaels dropped to 5-14 and 0-1 against league opponents. The two schools could meet again next weekend as part of the WCC Championships, which will take place at the University of San Diego from April 23 - 25.
Pepperdine lost only two of 15 sets in recording its fourth shutout of the season. The Waves' No. 1 doubles team of Alejandro Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico/John F. Kennedy School) and Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Preparatory Academy) dropped an 8-1 decision to Gavin Leon and Lucas Tirelli, and freshman Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) lost his first set at No. 3 singles to Sherif Hamdy 7-6 (7) before rallying to beat him in the second set 6-2 and again in a tiebreak, 10-4.
Tearney won nine of the final 10 tiebreak points after being down 3-1.
Although Pepperdine's No. 1 doubles team faltered, its No. 2 and 3 teams had little difficulty in winning their matches. The No. 2 duo of Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico/San Juan Educational School) and Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy), which competed together for the first time today, blanked Andrea Zannoni and Mike Luck, 8-0, in a match that took less than 30 minutes to complete.
And on the No. 3 court, the tandem of Jenson Turner (Woodland Hills, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) and Daniel Moss (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) clinched the doubles point with its 8-2 triumph over Hamdy and partner Steven Dawson-Roberts. Turner and Moss had competed together only one prior to today and that was during Pepperdine's tournament season.
The Waves continued their roll in singles as their No. 1, 2 and 4 players won convincingly in straight sets. Fanselow, a freshman at No. 2 singles, rebounded from his doubles loss by giving Zannoni a double bagel on the scoreboard, and then No. 32-ranked senior Bassam Beidas (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House School) finished second with a strong, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Tirelli at the top spot.
Beidas, who was playing his final home match today, finished the regular season with an overall record of 27-10 and 12-9 at No. 1 singles. He has won his last six matches and is 8-2 over his last 10 individual contests.
Freshman Hovhannisyan grabbed the deciding team point with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Leon at No. 4 singles to improve his record at that position to 7-3.
"Mousheg was our star MVP today in both doubles and singles, I was very happy with his performances," Pepperdine head coach Adam Steinberg said. "He hasn't played many doubles matches all year but was simply terrific and also did a great job in singles."
Elsewhere on the court, Moss beat Carreeno 7-6 (5) and 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and Turner bested Dawson-Roberts at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 7-5.
