Waves Defeat Saint Mary's, 4-1
April 12, 2014
MORAGA, Calif. - The #47 Pepperdine men's tennis team improved to a perfect 8-0 in the West Coast Conference, defeating Saint Mary's 4-1. The Waves have now won six in a row heading into next week Wednesday's regular-season finale at #49 San Diego, also undefeated in league matches.
Senior duo Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) and Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) got Pepperdine started in doubles, edging Joakim Norstrom and Thomas Hunt, 8-6 in the top doubles match.
Although the Gaels earned the win at No. 3, Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) and Pedro Leme (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Mackenzie Tambore) were in firm control of their match and beat Samuel Bloore and Wil Martin 8-4 to clinch the point.
David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) got the Waves started off on the right foot in singles, giving up just one game against Hunt en route to the straight-set victory.
Saint Mary's put a point on the board when Nathan Lewis topped Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS), 6-3, 6-2.
Hill, playing at No. 6, extended Pepperdine's lead to 3-1 with his 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Martin.
Sarkissian held dual-clinching honors today. The Waves' ace, ranked a league-best #27, downed Norstrom 7-5, 6-2.
With the dual decided, the remaining matches were not played out to completion.
Pepperdine faces the Toreros on the road next week Wednesday. Although USD has two regular-season matches left following the April 16 tilt, a Wave victory would secure first place in the WCC standings and the No. 1 seed heading into the conference tournament. Pepperdine defeated San Diego 4-1 back in January in a nonconference meeting.
