Pepperdine Blanks Gonzaga, 7-0
April 4, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – After a closely contested doubles point, the #48 Pepperdine men’s tennis team dominated singles play versus Gonzaga and won 7-0. With the win, the Waves remain undefeated in West Coast Conference play in 2014 as they enter their home finale tomorrow vs. Portland.
With the victory, Pepperdine improves to 13-11 on the year, and a perfect 5-0 in the WCC. The Zags fall to 9-9 and 0-5 in the league.
Portland is also undefeated in conference action at 3-0.
Today’s dual began in doubles, and although all three matches played out close, Pepperdine was able to pocket the point.
David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) and Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent’s HS) were the first off the court, following their 8-4 triumph over Joey Brandt and Vladimir Mijatovic at No. 2.
Seniors Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) and Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC), ranked #10 in doubles, held off an upset bid by Jack Schoebel and Muzeen Ismath to emerge with the 8-6 victory and secure the doubles point for the Waves.
It was all Pepperdine in singles, as the Waves did not drop a single set.
Thakkar came up just one game shy of posting his first collegiate singles shutout, and settled for a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Ismath.
Sarkissian, currently at #30 in the singles rankings, made short work of Nick Kamisar, winning 6-2, 6-1 to make it a 3-0 dual.
Playing at No. 4, Pedro Leme (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Mackenzie Tambore) put Pepperdine out of reach, chalking a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Schoebel.
Although the dual was clinched, the Waves and Bulldogs battled on.
Sofaer rebounded from a 2-4 deficit in set two versus Mijatovic to win in straight sets, followed by Alexander Solonin’s (Tarzana, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) second-consecutive win at No. 6.
Alcantara wrapped the day’s action for Pepperdine, issuing Hayden Smith a 6-4, 6-2 loss.
Tomorrow, the Waves celebrate Senior Day and the careers of Alcantara, Sarkissian and Sofaer as they play in their final home match. First serve between Pepperdine and Portland is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans unable to make it can follow live scores here.
