Men's Tennis Suffers 4-2 Loss to South Florida

URBANA, ILL. – Despite winning the doubles point, the #42 Pepperdine men’s tennis team suffered a 4-2 loss to #47 South Florida today in a neutral-court dual on the campus of the University of Illinois. Senior David Sofaer picked up the Waves’ long singles victory.
The Waves (9-9) got off to a brilliant start in doubles, winning two of the three contests to lay claim to the opening point.
Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) teamed up with Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent’s HS) to beat Everth Dzib and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy by an 8-5 tally.
Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) and Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State), listed at #15 in the ITA doubles rankings, picked up their third win over a ranked opponent with an 8-5 victory over #24 Roberto Cid and Sasha Gozun.
Sarkissian and Alcantara are now a team-best 11-3 in dual matches this season, and 13-4 overall.
The Bulls (10-4) got back on track in singles, winning four of the matches to take the team victory.
Sofaer was the lone victor for Pepperdine, posting a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Kalyuzhnyy from the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
The Waves host three duals next week on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, beginning with a Wednesday afternoon matchup against #2 Oklahoma at 1 p.m. Pepperdine continues West Coast Conference action on Friday, March 21 with a 5 p.m. dual vs. San Francisco. The week concludes with a rematch against #20 Cal on Sunday, March 23.
