#42 Pepperdine Drops 5-0 Decision to #6 Illinois
March 14, 2014
URBANA, Ill. – The #42 Pepperdine men’s tennis team was unable to overcome a powerful top-10 ranked Illinois team and fell 5-0 inside the Atkins Tennis Center. The match was broadcast online on ESPN3 as part of its College Match Day coverage.
As part of College Match Day, the dual utilized a special scoring format in which singles was played first. Doubles would only be contested in the event of a tie after singles as a form of “overtime.”
The Illini (11-4), proved they are ranked #6 in the NCAA for a reason. The home team won first sets on all six singles courts to control the early tempo.
Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) was unable to keep pace with #42 Tim Kopinski, and fell 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
After falling in the opening stanza, Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) bounced back in the second and took a 5-4 lead against Ross Guignon. The freshman Wave was unable to prolong the match to a third set, however, and lost 7-5 in set two.
After Blake Bazarnik gave Illinois the 3-0 lead with a win from court three, matches at the No. 5 and No. 6 lineup positions finished almost simultaneously to put the home squad out of reach.
Pedro Leme (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Mackenzie Tambore) suffered a narrow 6-3, 6-4 decision against Alex James, while Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) lost in straight sets to Julian Childers.
Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) was edged in the first set 5-7 versus Farris Gosea and did not complete his match with the dual decided.
The Waves (9-8) look to get back in the win column tomorrow, March 15, when they face #47 South Florida in a neutral court dual in Urbana, Ill. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. (PT)
