Amidst Stormy Weather, Waves Tally Wins in La Jolla
March 1, 2014
LA JOLLA, Calif. – After being sidelined all day yesterday due to rain, the Pepperdine men’s tennis team was able to get through almost two rounds today at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship. Headlining for the Waves was Kento Tanaka-Tamaki and Stefan Menichella, who won twice to advance to the round of 32.
Because of rain delays, today’s neutral court dual between Pepperdine and William & Mary was canceled.
Tanaka-Tamaki (Kihei, Hawaii/St. Anthony Junior-Senior HS) and Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) opened the day with a narrow 8-6 triumph over Aaron Chaffeee and Will Juggins, coincidentally from William & Mary.
In the round of 64, the Wave tandem beat Christiano Fabrizio and Paul Settles by an 8-6 tally.
The victories were especially sweet for Tanaka-Tamaki, as he is competing in his first tournament since undergoing knee surgery.
Russell Josh Evangelista (Almere, Netherlands/Calandlyceum) and Alexander Solonin (Tarzana, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) upset ninth-seeded Scott Kintz and Scott Lippitt, 9-7, before bowing out in the second round to Nikolas Marino and Zhenya Pereverzin.
Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) and Alex Giannini (Los Angeles, Calif./Gorman Learning Center) got just one match under their belts today, besting Brendan Wee and Jason Nguyen in the round of 128.
Pedro Leme (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Mackenzie Tambore) and Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/ St. Vincent's HS) also tasted victory on Saturday, defeating Farshid Khodaei and Jimmy Gleason, 8-1.
The three undefeated Pepperdine pairs will resume action tomorrow at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship, now in its 125th year. Because of weather delays, no consolation matches will be contested.
