#15 Waves Stumble vs. #22 Illinois
Feb. 15, 2014
HOUSTON – The #15 Pepperdine men’s tennis team suffered a 4-0 loss to #22 Illinois in the consolation round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Waves suffered a heartbreaking loss in doubles that came down to a tiebreaker before the Illini rode the momentum to victory in singles.
Pepperdine will have a shot at redemption against Illinois when the two teams square off again on March 14 in Urbana, Ill.
From the No. 2 spot in the doubles lineup, David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) and Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) earned a solid 6-2 victory over Jared Hiltzik and Farris Gosea to match the Illini’s win at No. 1.
The doubles point rested on the outcome of the No. 3 match, where Alex Giannini (Los Angeles, Calif./Gorman Learning Center) and Pedro Leme (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Mackenzie Tambore) were in a deadlocked battle with Brian Page and Julian Childers.
The match was sent to a tiebreaker after both pairs won five games apiece. Leme and Giannini fought point-for-point with Page and Childers in the tiebreaker, but ultimately fell on the wrong side of a heartbreaker 8-6 loss.
With the opening edge, Illinois was able to pick up three straight-set singles victories to clinch the dual 4-0.
Pepperdine will face either #8 Texas A&M or #14 Tennessee in Sunday’s final consolation round. Match time is set for 3 p.m. (PT) and it will be contested at the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club. Links to live scores, brackets and more can be found at the Tournament Central.
