Feb. 14, 2014
HOUSTON – After a catching a last-minute flight on Thursday evening to Houston for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, the #15 Pepperdine men’s tennis team made a quick turnaround and stepped on the court to face #2 UCLA this morning. The Bruins, seeded second overall, advanced to the next round with the 4-0 victory.
Duke was supposed to play UCLA in the opening round, but Mother Nature had other plans as snow storms foiled the Blue Devils’ attempt to make it out of Durham.
As the next highest ranked team not already at the national indoor championship, the Waves were extended a last-minute invite into the tournament. The Waves did not reach their hotel until 1 a.m. local time, and were up and at ‘em first thing in the morning to warm up for their noon start.
UCLA swept the doubles point with wins from the top two spots in the lineup.
A well-rested and talented Bruin squad overpowered the Waves in singles, but not without some challenges.
Leme suffered a narrow 6-4 loss in the first set to Mkrtchian and battled all the way to the second-set tiebreaker before succumbing to defeat.
In the No. 1 match, #36-ranked Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) faced off with the top-ranked player in all of college tennis: Clay Thompson. Thompson took the opening edge 6-4 but Sarkissian was ahead 5-4 in set two when the dual was clinched.
Pepperdine continues play tomorrow in consolation action vs. #22 Illinois at 7 a.m. (PT) inside the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club. Live scores, results and brackets can be found at the Tournament Central.
