Waves in Action in Palm Springs, Thousand Oaks
Jan. 17, 2014
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Members of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team competed in two different tournaments today: the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs and the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in nearby Thousand Oaks. Pedro Leme made his debut for the Waves with two wins in singles play.
Leme (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Mackenzie Tambore) advanced to the quarterfinals at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. In the opening round, the sophomore battled Jhonatan Gonzalez for three sets and won by a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
In the round of 16, Leme edged Andrew Raphaelson 6-4 in the opening frame before falling 6-3 in the second. The Wave got back on track, however, and moved onto the next round with the 6-3 triumph in the set three.
At the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Thousand Oaks, Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) won his first match of the day – a three set decision against Anthony Tsodikov of Stanford – but fell in the second round to exit the tournament.
Leme, Hill and Giannini continue play at the NCTC on Saturday.
