KAHUKU, Hawaii Â The Pepperdine men’s golf team improved its score by six strokes during Tuesday’s second round of the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate and moved up four spots and into a tie for 11th place with one round to go.
Pepperdine began the day in a tie for 15th place but shot an even-par 288. That gave the Waves a total of a 6-over 582 (294-288), same as Long Beach State. The 19-team field is fairly bunched up and Pepperdine is only seven shots out of fifth place.
The final 18 holes will be played on Wednesday at the par-72 Palmer Course at the Turtle Bay Resort.
Four of the Waves posted better scores than the first round, led by redshirt freshman Josh Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS), who fired a 2-under 70 that catapulted him into a tie for 17th place with a 1-under 143 (73-70).
Sophomore Andrew Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) shot a 1-over 73, down from the 71 he shot on Monday, but he still moved up a couple of spots in the standings and is now tied for 23rd at 144.
Junior Shane Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) had an even-par 72 and is tied for 31st at 145 (73-72), sophomore Austyn Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) had a 1-over 73 and is tied for 65th at 150 (77-73) and junior Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) is tied for 97th at 157 (81-76).
This is the final tournament of the fall for the Waves.
