Waves Finish in Eighth Place at Turtle Bay

KAHUKU, Hawaii – Freshman Andrew Putnam tied a school record with a nine-under 63 to finish in a tie for third place as the Waves finished the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate in a tie for eighth place at -31 on Wednesday in Kahuku, Hawaii.

Putnam’s (University Place, Wash./Life Christian HS) 63 tied him with former Waves’ standout Jason Allred, who previously held the school record outright by shooting a 63 at the 2000 Western Intercollegiate. Putnam finished in third place at -15, only one stroke behind co-medalists Charles Ford of Tennessee and Sean Shahi of UC Irvine. Putnam now owns a third place and a second place finish in only two collegiate tournaments, as he took second-place honors at the Club Glove Intercollegiate in his first collegiate event, held from Oct. 22-23.

"I was really pleased for Andrew to back up his great showing two weeks ago with another great showing under totally opposite conditions," Pepperdine Coach John Geiberger said.

The Waves shot 277 on Wednesday to finish the tournament -31 (833), as Tennessee claimed the team crown after finishing the tournament at -64 (800). Eric Shriver (Cary, N.C./Green Hope HS) finished in a tie for 21st at -8 (208) after firing a three-under 69 on Wednesday, Jesse Barnsley (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) finished in a tie for 44th at -5 (211) after carding a 74, Colin Wilcox (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) finished in 70th at even par for the tournament (216) after shooting a 72, and Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) finished in a tie for 80th at +3 (219) after registering a 73.

"The conditions were perfect, there was no wind for three days, so it becomes a birdie fest when that’s the case," Geiberger said. "You’re only as good as your fourth score and we didn’t have that the second and third day. The guys competed hard, we just couldn’t keep up with the other teams. You're not gonna play well every tournament all year, but it was a good experience for the team."

This was the Waves’ final fall tournament. The Waves begin the spring season at the John Hayt Collegiate in Jacksonville, Fla. from Feb. 17-19, 2008.
