Men’s Golf Leads William Tucker Intercollegiate

Sept. 14, 2007

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Led by senior Jesse Barnsley’s rounds of 66-67, the Pepperdine men’s golf team started the year off with a bang, shooting even par (290-286=576) through 36 holes to lead the William Tucker Intercollegiate Tournament at the Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. by three shots over Colorado and San Diego State.

“Jesse played extremely well, and that’s why we’re at the top of the leaderboard,” Pepperdine Coach John Geiberger said. “We didn’t play well as a team and we made too many mistakes, but the good news is we’re in contention and we have a chance to compete for the victory tomorrow.”

Barnsley’s (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) 11-under total of 133 leads the field, as he holds a seven-shot lead over New Mexico’s Jacob Lestishen, who totaled 140. Barnsley began the day by recording six birdies and an eagle en-route to a career-best six-under 66. He continued his hot play by shooting a five-under 67 in the afternoon that included five consecutive birdies.

Senior Eric Shriver (Cary, N.C./Green Hope HS) is tied for fifth place at two-under after posting rounds of 70-72 (142), senior Colin Wilcox (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) is five-over after carding rounds of 74-75 (149), sophomore Carl Smith is seven-over after tallying rounds of 79-72 (151), and sophomore Andrew Widmar (El Paso, Texas/Cathedral HS) is 17-over after registering rounds of 83-78 (161).

“It’s nice to go out there and have a chance to win the first tournament of the year,” Geiberger said. “We can’t just rely on Jesse tomorrow, the other guys are going to have to step up if we want to win.”

The final round of the William Tucker Intercollegiate Tournament commences at 7:30 a.m. MT Saturday with a shotgun start. Live stats can be found at www.golfstat.com
