Pepperdine in Eighth Place After First Round of TOPY Cup

Fukushima, Japan - Sophomore Michael Baird shot an opening-round 2-over par 74 on Tuesday and the Pepperdine men's golf team is in eighth place after the first round of the 11-team TOPY Cup U.S.-Japan Intercollegiate Championships at the Tanagura Country Club in Fukushima, Japan.
The Waves shot a team score of 13-over par 301 and is 20 shots behind Georgia State, which finished the first 18 holes with a 7-under score of 281.
Individually, Baird is tied for 21st, seven shots behind Georgia State's Joel Sjoholm, who opened with a 5-under 67.
Pepperdine junior J.J. Wood and senior Alex Coe carded rounds of 75 while sophomores Colin Wilcox and Jesse Barnsley posted scores of 77 and 78, respectively.
Of the four American teams in the field, Pepperdine is currently third behind Georgia State and South Carolina (294) and ahead of Michigan State (303).
The tournament continues with second-round action on Wednesday and concludes on Thursday.
