Aug. 24, 2005
Malibu, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's golf team will be well represented at this week's Buick Championship at the Tournament Players Club at River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, as three former Wave All-Americans will be competing in the PGA Tour event.
Jason Gore, who became a national story and fan-favorite at June's U.S. Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina, Jason Allred, who earned his Tour Card and has been competing in selected PGA Tour events this year, and Michael Putnam, who concluded a standout career at Pepperdine this past spring, are all scheduled to take part in the $4,300,000 Buick Championship that gets underway on Thursday.
Gore regained his TOUR card after winning three straight Nationwide Tour events earlier this summer and is currently No. 1 on the tour's money list with $355,522.
Allred competed at Pepperdine from 1998-2002 and capped his collegiate career by earning All-American honors and winning the inaugural Byron Nelson Award in 2002. He is making his 20th start of the season this week with his best finish coming at the Sony Open in Hawaii where he tied for 17th.
Putnam, a two-time All-American and the 2005 NCAA Division I Runner-Up at the NCAA Championships, is making his professional debut this week.
Since completing his collegiate career in June, Putnam has played in the U.S. Open, helped the U.S. Palmer Cup Team to win over Europe and was part of the winning U.S. Walker Cup Team that defeated a team of amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland earlier this month.
The Buick Championship gets underway on Thursday and runs through Sunday. Thursday and Friday's rounds will be televised by the USA Network while Saturday and Sunday's action will air on CBS
The action can also be followed live on www.PGATour.com.
Putnam is scheduled to begin the first round at 8:40 a.m. (EDT) while Gore starts at 8:50 a.m. (EDT) and Allred begins his round at 1:30 p.m. (EDT).
