Wedel Earns Spot in NCAA Golf Regional in Oregon
May 5, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. - Frederick Wedel of the Pepperdine men's golf team will see his season continue as the sophomore was selected to play in an NCAA Regional next week in Eugene, Ore.
Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) is one of 10 individuals (as well as 13 teams) headed to Eugene Country Club. Three rounds will be played between May 15-17.
Five of the 13 teams will advance to the NCAA Championships (May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.). For Wedel to move on, he'll need to shoot the lowest score among the non-qualifying teams and other individuals.
Wedel has a team-best 72.97 scoring average in 2013-14. At 11 tournaments, he's posted team bests of four top-10 and six top-20 finishes. He earned All-West Coast Conference honorable mention honors after tying for 13th place at the WCC Championships two weeks ago. Wedel has played in the top 13 at three straight and four of the last five tournaments, including a career-best-tying tie for fourth place at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational.
"During the spring we knew we needed to play well as a team, and we had to get better heading into the conference tournament," Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard said. "That brought out the best in Fred. I saw a little different focus in him, and he practiced better. I'm definitely excited for him.
"As a sophomore, this is going to be great for him moving forward. Next year he'll be better because of it. He's looking forward to the opportunity. He knows that if he plays well, he can go to nationals."
Pepperdine last sent players to a regional in 2012. Josh Anderson and Johnny Mac Arthur both earned spots in the NCAA West Regional at Stanford Golf Course. Anderson won the tournament and advanced to the NCAA Championships.
Wedel is one of four WCC golfers competing at the regional in Oregon, as he will be joined by Cory McElyea of San Francisco, Byron Meth of Pacific and Tyler Torano of Loyola Marymount.
