Men's Golf Aims for Big Finish at WCCs

VALLEJO, Calif. – The Pepperdine men’s golf team is within striking distance after two rounds of the West Coast Conference Championships, but the Waves will need a big finish if they hope to claim their 17th league title.

Pepperdine is tied for third place along with Santa Clara at a 2-under 574. San Francisco is nine strokes ahead at 565 and Loyola Marymount is five strokes ahead at 569.

The third and final round will be played on Tuesday at the par-72 Hiddenbrooke Golf Course. The Waves shot a 3-under 285 during the morning and had a 1-over 289 during the afternoon on Monday.

Junior Shane Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) had perhaps the best day of his career, firing a 1-under 71 and a 4-under 68, good for a 5-under 139 and a tie for third place. He had three birdies and two bogies during the morning round. He began the afternoon with a bogey on the third hole, but was 2-under after 12 holes and birdied the 17th and 18th. The best tournament finish of his career thus far has been a tie for 11th place.

Mason is four strokes behind the leader, Greg Moss of Loyola Marymount.

Sophomore Andrew Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) is tied for 14th place after an even-par 144. He was tied for seventh after a 1-under 71 during the morning round, and then shot a 1-over 73 in the afternoon. He had birdies on the 15th and 18th holes and a total of four for the round.

Redshirt freshman Josh Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) is tied for 18th place with a 2-over 146. He had an even-par 72 during the morning that included an eagle on the par-5 12th hole and three birdies on the final five holes. He had three birdies during the afternoon and looked to be headed toward another even-par round before a double-bogey on the 18th.

Sophomore Austyn Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) is in 24th place with a 3-over 147. Like Putnam, he had a 1-under 71 in the morning that included three birdies. He then shot a 76 in the afternoon.

Sophomore Chad Vivolo (Carmel, Calif./Robert Louis Stevenson HS) is tied for 28th place after a 75 and a 74 gave him a total of a 5-over 149. He finished his afternoon round very well, with a birdie on 16 and an eagle on the par-5 18th.
