AUSTIN, Texas -- The Pepperdine men’s golf team shot rounds of 296 and 297 to finish the first day of competition at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in eighth place at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
Pepperdine’s first day total of 593 put the Waves at +25 and 16 shots behind leader Oklahoma State, who is at +9.
Andrew Widmar (El Paso, Texas/Cathedral HS) was the story for the Waves on Monday, as he shot rounds of 70 and 72 to finish the first day at even par and tied for second place. Widmar is one shot behind leader Charlie Holland of Texas, who stands at -1.
Andrew Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) also enjoyed a strong first day, as he shot rounds of 74 and 70 to finish the first two rounds at +2 and in a tie for 10th place. Jesse Barnsley (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) carded rounds of 76 and 75 to finish +9 to sit in a tie for 40th place, Colin Wilcox (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) shot rounds of 76 and 80 to finish in a tie for 61st at +14, and Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) is tied for 76th at +21 after carding rounds of 83 and 80.
The final round of the Morris Williams Intercollegiate begins tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
