Men's Golf Travels to Texas

UPCOMING — The Pepperdine men’s golf team will travel to the Lone Star State next week to compete at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate, beginning Monday, Apr. 7 through Tuesday, Apr. 8 in Austin, Texas at the University of Texas Golf Club.

THE COURSE — The University of Texas Golf Club is a 7,412 yard, par-71 course designed by Bechtol Russell. From its state-of-the-art practice facility and richly appointed clubhouse, to its panoramic hill country setting nestled between Lake Austin and Lake Travis in Steiner Ranch, the club promises a legendary golf experience.

THE FIELD — Pepperdine is one of 15 teams competing in the Morris Williams Intercollegiate field. The Waves will be joined by host Texas, Alabama, Auburn, BYU, Central Florida, Fresno State, Louisville, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, Tulsa, San Diego and UNLV.

PEPPERDINE LINEUP — The anticipated lineup for the Morris Williams Intercollegiate is Jesse Barnsley, Andrew Putnam, Colin Wilcox, Andrew Widmar and Carl Smith.

LIVE STATS — Live scoring for the Morris Williams Intercollegiate can be found on www.golfstat.com.

RANKINGS — The Waves are currently ranked #35 by Golfweek/Sagarin, #37 by Golfstat and receiving votes in GolfWorld/Nike poll. Additionally, Andrew Putnam is ranked 22nd in the Golf Week/Sagarin individual rankings and Jesse Barnsley is 59th.

LAST TIME OUT — Pepperdine finished in seventh place at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. The Waves were led by freshman Andrew Putnam, who shot a final-round 68 to finish tied for 5th place, his third top five finish of the year in only six tournaments.

PEPPERDINE AT THE MORRIS WILLIAMS INTERCOLLEGIATE — This is the eighth time the Waves will compete at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate. The Waves did not compete in the event last year, and their highest finish at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate was a 2nd place showing in 2002.

JOHN GEIBERGER — The 2007-08 season marks John Geiberger’s 12th as head coach of Pepperdine. In his first season as coach of the Waves, Geiberger led the team to the 1997 NCAA national title, the first in team history. Under Geiberger’s guidance, Pepperdine has won the WCC title nine times (1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007) and he has earned the league’s Coach of the Year honors on five occasions (1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2005).

PEPPERDINE AMONG THE BEST — Golf Digest recently released its College Guide in which golf programs were ranked based on their total ability to provide a quality experience for a student-athlete. The Pepperdine men’s program ranked #5 in the nation in the magazine’s overall balanced category, which takes into account the team’s success, player growth, academics, climate, facilities and coaches.

2007-08 ACCOLADES — After being named Golf World’s College Player of the Week following his eight-stroke victory at the William Tucker Intercollegiate, Senior Jesse Barnsley was also named the WCC Player of the Month for September. Freshman Andrew Putnam was named WCC Co-Player of the Month for October after finishing in second place in his first collegiate tournament at the Club Glove Intercollegiate.

2006-07 RECAP — The Waves captured the school’s ninth WCC crown in the last 11 seasons and made its 10th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. In the NCAA West Regionals, the Waves tied for 12th and came two shots short of a berth in the NCAA Championships.

FAMILIAR FACES — Pepperdine returns every member from the 2006-07 squad that claimed the WCC crown and the school’s 10th consecutive trip to the NCAA West Regionals. Jesse Barnsley, Eric Shriver and Colin Wilcox return for their senior seasons, followed by sophomores Olin Browne, Shane Mason, Jorge Mazario, Carl Smith and Andrew Widmar. Redshirt freshman Chad Vivolo will begin his first season of competition with the Waves, as they welcome in freshmen Josh Anderson, Austyn Karle and Andrew Putnam.

MEN’S GOLF HISTORY — Following the blueprint of other athletics programs at Pepperdine, the men’s golf team has blossomed to become a nationally recognized program, and the Waves reached the pinnacle of success in May of 1997 by winning the NCAA title for the first time. Pepperdine has made seven appearances at the NCAA Championships since 1993, and the Waves have established themselves as a perennial challenger for the NCAA team title. The 2006-07 season saw the Waves capture their ninth WCC crown in the past 11 seasons while also advancing to the NCAA Regional round for the 10th consecutive season.
