Oct. 21, 2013
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's golf played two quality rounds on Monday to move into fourth place at Cal State Northridge's Bill Cullum Invitational.
The Waves shot a 4-over 292 in the morning but followed it up with a 2-under 286 in the afternoon, good for a total of a 2-over 578 at the par-72 Wood Ranch Golf Club.
Four of the 20 teams weren't able to finish before darkness set in. They'll go out at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, and then the rest of the teams will join them with a shotgun start for the third round at 8 a.m.
It may be tough for the Waves to move up in the standings, as the top three of San Diego (-19), Arizona State (-13) and Cal State Fullerton (-8) have a sizeable advantage. Close behind Pepperdine at 4-over are UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara.
Leading the Waves on the day was sophomore Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) with a 1-under 143 (71-72). Wedel had four birdies in each of his two rounds.
Senior Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Redlands) has an even-par 144 (72-72), junior Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) is at 146 (74-72), sophomore Nick Thomas (Westlake Village, Calif./Chaminade College Prep/California) is at 149 (79-70) and senior Parker Page (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS) is at 151 (75-76). Five of Sanders' eight birdies came during his first round. Thomas rebounded with the best round of the day for the Waves in the afternoon, and his 2-under 70 included five birdies.
In the individual standings according to Golfstat (which are subject to change with the golfers yet to finish the third round), Wedel was tied for 19th place, Sanders was tied for 23rd, DeHuff was tied for 35th, Thomas was tied for 53rd and Page was tied for 63rd.
The Waves also have sophomore Cameron Davison (Duncan, B.C./Duncan Christian HS) competing as an individual. He shot 84-83 for a total of 167, but had an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole during his first round.
