Mac Arthur Shoots 2-Under 70 at Second Round of WCC Championships
April 17, 2012
HOLLISTER, Calif. - Junior Johnny Mac Arthur fired a 2-under 70 to highlight the Pepperdine men's golf team's second round at the West Coast Conference Championships on Tuesday. The Waves stand in seventh place as a team.
The Waves have shot 295-296 at the par-72 San Juan Oaks Golf Club, good for a 15-over 591. The third and final round is on Wednesday.
"This wasn't our best collective team effort," Pepperdine Coach John Geiberger said. "The course was there for the taking. We just needed to score better. Johnny played well and played even better than his score. He got off to a good start and had chances to score 5- or 6-under. He's getting closer to breaking through. In team golf you need more than one or two good scores, though. You won't go far with that, especially with these conditions."
Mac Arthur (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) began his day with three straight birdies, and four on his first seven holes. He finished with six birdies on the day as his excellent round moved him up 11 places on the leaderboard and into a tie for 11th place with an even-par 144 (74-70).
Senior Josh Anderson (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) is tied for 17th place with a 2-over 146 (72-74), freshman Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) is tied for 29th at 151 (75-76), sophomore Parker Page (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS) is also tied for 29th at 151 (74-77) and sophomore Alex Forss (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak HS) is tied for 33rd at 152 (76-76).
Anderson had four birdies, Forss had three and DeHuff had two.
Saint Mary's still leads the team competition and holds a six-stroke lead over San Francisco with a 15-under 561. The individual leader is the Gaels' Jonathan De Los Reye, who has a 6-under 138 and a one-shot lead.
