Men's Golf Within Striking Distance at WCC Championships

BREMERTON, Wash. - After Tuesday's second round of the West Coast Conference Championships, the Pepperdine men's golf team is one of six teams within five shots of the leader, setting up a big final round on Wednesday.
The Waves are tied for sixth place at a 6-over 582 (290-292) with San Francisco at the par-72 Gold Mountain Golf Club. But while Pepperdine remains within striking distance of first-place Saint Mary's (577), so does BYU (580), Santa Clara (580), San Diego (581) and Pacific (581).
Pepperdine has won 17 WCC titles, more than any other school, but needs to add another championship trophy to its haul to see its season continue.
Junior Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) leads the Waves as he's tied for fourth place in the individual standings, while sophomore Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) had Pepperdine's best round on Tuesday with a 1-under 71.
DeHuff has a 2-under 142 (70-72) and he's five shots behind the leader. The WCC Player of the Month for March had four birdies on the day, including three on his back nine.
Wedel moved up to a tie for eighth place with a 1-under 143 (72-71). He had three birdies on Tuesday.
Sophomore David Pelekoudas (Irvine, Calif./University HS/Orange Coast CC) is tied for 19th at 147 (72-75), senior Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Redlands) is tied for 32nd at 152 (78-74) and sophomore Nick Thomas (Westlake Village, Calif./Chaminade College Prep/California) is 41st at 156 (76-80). Pelekoudas and Sanders each had two birdies on Tuesday. Thomas recorded three straight birdies on holes 14, 15 and 16.
