UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - On the same day he was named the West Coast Conference's Player of the Month for March, junior Kevin DeHuff of the Pepperdine men's golf team fired a 5-under 66 to help the Waves to a fifth-place finish at the Redhawk Invitational on Tuesday.

The Waves began the day in eighth place but shot a 1-over 285 - the third-best score of the day - to move up three spots on the leaderboard. They finished with a 12-over 856 (283-288-285) at the par-71 Chambers Bay course. Three of the four teams that finished ahead of Pepperdine are ranked in the nation's top 30.

DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) was in a tie for 73rd after the first round and a tie for 53rd after the second round, but his career-best single-round score of 5-under moved him all the way up into a tie for 19th place with a 3-over 214 (76-72-66). The 66 was two strokes better than anyone else in the field on Tuesday. The junior had eight birdies on the day, including four straight between holes 16, 17, 18 and 1.

The top-finishing Wave was sophomore Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS), who tied for seventh place with a 1-under 210 (72-67-71). He had 16 pars to go with one birdie and one bogey on Tuesday. It was Wedel's team-high fourth top-10 finish of the season.

Additionally, senior Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Redlands) tied for 29th place at 218 (67-75-76), sophomore Nick Thomas (Westlake Village, Calif./Chaminade College Prep/California) tied for 34th at 220 (72-74-74) and freshman Robin Kang (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./South Torrance HS) tied for 67th at 227 (72-81-74).

This was the final regular-season event for the Waves, who will be back in Washington to play in the West Coast Conference Championships next week (April 14-16) at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
