Men's Golf Has Strong Second Round at ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Pepperdine men's golf team had one of its best rounds of the season and jumped into a tie for fifth place after Saturday's second round of the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational.
The Waves began the day in 10th place, but 4-under 67s by senior Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Redlands) and sophomore Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) helped pace the Waves to a 6-under 278. That moved them five spots up the leaderboard with a total of a 2-under 566 (288-78), where they're tied with Wichita State.
The third and final round at the par-71 Karsten Golf Course is on Sunday.
The team score of 6-under for 18 holes is second only this season to a 9-under in the final round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in the fall.
Sanders is tied for fourth place with a 5-under 137 (70-67). He had a total of six birdies on the day, including five in his first eight holes.
Junior Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) is tied for eighth place with a 4-under 138 (67-71). He had six birdies today and was headed for his second straight score of 4-under before having trouble on the final two holes.
Wedel moved up more than 30 spots on the leaderboard is tied for 19th place with a 1-under 141 (74-67). Like Sanders, he had five birdies on his first eight holes and finished with six for the round.
Freshman Robin Kang (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./South Torrance HS) is tied for 65th at 150 (77-73) and sophomore Nick Thomas (Westlake Village, Calif./Chaminade College Prep/California) is tied for 70th at 152 (78-74).
