Men's Golf Finishes Sixth at Own Jones Invitational
Feb. 25, 2014
SOMIS, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's golf wrapped up its own Jones Invitational with a sixth-place finish on Tuesday. This is the 10th time that the Waves have hosted a tournament at Saticoy Country Club, but the first since 2007.
The event had a dramatic finish, as USC's Anthony Paolucci and San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini headed to the 54th and final hole tied atop the individual leaderboard. Paolucci birdied the par-5 18th hole to claim medalist honors. But, it wasn't enough to give the Trojans (882) the team trophy, as the Aztecs (881) were victorious by just one stroke.
The Waves shot a 910 (306-303-301) at the par-72 course, and were able to pass Georgia State after opening the day in seventh place.
"I want to thank everyone that made this a great tournament," Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard said. "The staff at Saticoy, led by Tom Szwedzinski, all of our volunteers and course officials, and our sponsor, the Jones Sports Company. They brought a lot of energy and wanted to make this a great event. For our first year back here, it went well. I got a lot of positive feedback. It's a difficult golf course, but this was a success for sure."
Sophomore Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) had the Waves' best finish, a tie for 10th place. He shot a 7-over 223 (71-74-78).
Junior Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) and sophomore David Pelekoudas (Irvine, Calif./University HS/Orange Coast CC) had the best rounds of the day for the Waves with 2-over 74s. Both players improved their scores from round to round. DeHuff tied for 27th place at 228 (79-75-74) and had a team-high four birdies on the day. Pelekoudas tied for 33rd at 232 (81-77-74).
Playing as individuals, freshman Robin Kang (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./South Torrance HS) tied for 36th at 233 (80-76-77) and freshman Ian Mankoff (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest HS) tied for 59th at 244 (82-77-85).
"Because this golf course is so difficult, some of the scores may not look so great, but in finishing sixth we beat some good teams," Beard said. "This will give us some momentum heading to our next tournament. Putting four guys in the top 33 was a good showing. I'm encouraged about where we're headed."
The Waves next compete at the San Diego Classic on March 10-11.
