Men's Golf Finishes Up at The Prestige at PGA West
Feb. 19, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. - Frederick Wedel's 2-under 69 led the Pepperdine men's golf team as the Waves closed out The Prestige at PGA West on Wednesday.
The Waves had a good ending after a rough start to the tournament. After a 306 on Monday at the par-71 Greg Norman Course, the Waves came back with a 5-under 279 on Tuesday and a 1-over 285 today for a three-day total of 870. Unfortunately, in a tournament that featured a very strong field including eight of Golfstat's top 50 teams, that was only enough for an 11th-place finish.
Senior Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Redlands) had the Waves' best finish, a tie for 21st place with an even-par 213 (75-67-71). Sanders had four birdies on the day, including three in his final six holes.
Junior Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) tied for 39th with a 4-over 217 (78-68-71), while Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) moved up to a tie for 48th at 219 (77-73-69). Wedel had a total of five birdies, and like Sanders, had three in the last six holes. DeHuff also recorded five birdies.
Sophomore David Pelekoudas (Irvine, Calif./University HS/Orange Coast CC), who was making his Pepperdine debut, tied for 52nd at 221 (76-71-74). Playing as an individual, freshman Ian Mankoff (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest HS) was 69th at 236 (79-81-76). Sophomore Nick Thomas (Westlake Village, Calif./Chaminade College Prep/California) was 71st at 239 (79-85-75) and he had an eagle on the par-4 11th hole.
Pepperdine hosts the Jones Invitational at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif., next week (Feb. 24-25).
