Dec. 28, 2004
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Bobby Dixon had six 3-pointers and 26 points to help Troy to a 72-69 win Tuesday night over Pepperdine in the first round of the Lobo Invitational.
Pepperdine just finished a 10-0 run that tied the game when Dixon made the go-ahead free throw with less than 22 seconds remaining to give the Trojans a 70-69 lead.
Following a Waves' turnover, Jacob Hazouri added two free throws with four seconds left to end the scoring. He finished with 13 points.
Led by senior forward Yakhouba Diawara and junior guard Alex Acker, the Waves (8-5) twice made it a 3-point game. But Dixon and forward Eddie Baker kept hitting 3s to assure Troy (2-8) the lead.
The Trojans connected on 13 of 40 3-point attempts, including seven in the second half.
Diawara finished with 19 points while senior forward Glen McGowan had 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Back-to-back buckets from Diawara gave Pepperdine a one-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half. But the Trojans ran off eight straight points, punctuated by a Hazouri 3-pointer and layup. The Trojans' lead grew to 10 points.
In the first half, Troy State raced out to a double-digit lead. Dixon helped with a pair of 3-pointers.
Troy State will play New Mexico, which beat Mississippi Valley State 101-68, in the final round of the Lobo Invitational on Wednesday night. Pepperdine will play the Delta Devils at 5 p.m. (PST).
