Waves Fall To Gauchos, 65-56

SANTA BARBARA, Calif - Cecil Brown scored a career-high 28 points, Glenn Turner added a career-high 13 and UC Santa Barbara limited Pepperdine to just 31.6% shooting from the field as the Gauchos (3-3) defeated the visiting Waves (1-5) 65-56 on Wednesday night.

Brown, a senior guard, scored UCSB¹s final seven points in the first half, including a three-point basket with three seconds to play tying score at 27-27. He continued to have a hot-hand in the second half as he scored 13 points, including nine during a decisive 20-6 run that turned a 34-31 deficit with 15:49 remaining into a 51-40 lead with 7:40 left. Turner had seven of his points during the rally as well.

Pepperdine, which led by as many as nine points in the first half, was ice cold in the second half making just 10-of-35 shots from the field, 28.6%. Still, the Waves trailing 57-42 with 4:09 to go in the game, used an 11-1 run to cut the gap to five, 58-53, with 40 seconds remaining. Tashaan Forehan-Kelly, who finished with a team-high 20 points, capped the 11-1 rally with consecutive three-point baskets, but the Gauchos made 8-of-9 free throws in the final 37 seconds to put the game away.

Forehan-Kelly made 5-of-7 field goals overall, 4-of-5 from three-point territory.

UCSB, which ended a three-game losing streak with the win, made 42.3% of its shots overall. Brown was 11-for-17 overall and 3-for-6 from beyond the three-point arc. The Gauchos also committed a season-low seven turnovers in the win. Pepperdine, which has now lost three games in a row, had 16 turnovers.

Freshman guard Michael Gerrity had 10 points and five assists for the Waves who wil travel to Colorado State on Saturday, Dec. 10.
