MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's basketball team begins the 2012-13 season with a home exhibition on Saturday night in Firestone Fieldhouse against Cal Lutheran.

The game tips at 5 p.m. between the Waves and the Kingsmen, an NCAA Division III squad located in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

"I'm eager for the season to start, and I'm excited for everything that we've put together," Pepperdine Coach Marty Wilson said. "We're tougher, physically and mentally. We're more skilled."

Tickets are $15 for lower or upper reserved, $12 for general admission and $5 for children ages 8 and younger. The game will be shown on pepperdinesports.com via WaveCasts as play-by-play announcer Al Epstein begins his 28th season with Pepperdine.

The Kingsmen went 11-13 overall and placed fifth in the SCIAC with a 7-7 mark last season. Led by 19th-year head coach Rich Rider, CLU returns just one of its top four scorers from last year. Senior forward Jayvaughn Nettles averaged 10.3 points last season, second on the squad.

The Waves are also in a season of change with just four letterwinners back from last season, plus three returning redshirts to go with six newcomers. Sophomore guard Jordan Baker (Tempe, Ariz./Tempe HS) is the team's top scorer back at 9.0 points per game, though senior guard Lorne Jackson (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) averaged 13.2 points in 2010-11 and was an All-West Coast Conference honorable mention selection before sitting out last season due to a knee injury. Senior guard Caleb Willis (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge HS), who averaged 6.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists, is another key returnee.

The Waves head into Saturday's exhibition a little shorthanded, as junior forward Malte Kramer (Frieburg, Germany/Cuesta College), sophomore center Jan Maehlen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS) and freshman guard Austin Mills (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) will miss the contest. Kramer (knee), Maehlen (hand) and Mills (hand) are currently injured.

Senior forward Brendan Lane (Rocklin, Calif./UCLA) is expected to redshirt this season but he could play in the exhibition in order to give the Waves 10 healthy bodies. The exhibition would not affect his redshirt status.

Pepperdine officially begins the season next Friday (Nov. 9) at Cal State Northridge at 7:30 p.m. The Waves' home opener is on Friday, Nov. 16 against Washington State.
