The Pepperdine men's basketball started its 2005-06 season in earnest on Saturday with a scrimmage at Firestone Fieldhouse. The scrimmage marked the official opening of practice for the Waves who begin their fifth season under head coach Paul Westphal.

Pepperdine returns nine letterwinners and six newcomers to a team that posted a 17-14 overall record and tied for fifth in the West Coast Conference (WCC) a year ago. Sophomore guard Kingsley Costain, who earned WCC All-Freshman honors last season, returns as the club's leading scorer after averaging 7.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists a contest.

Sophomore center Russell Hicks, who also earned WCC All-Freshman honors last year, returns as one of three starters from a year ago. Costain and junior guard Marvin Lea also started the Waves' final game of 2004-05. Hicks contributed 4.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks a contest while Lea averaged 4.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists a game.

Newcomers to the Waves' roster include junior Gregg Barlow (Las Vegas, Nev. / Mt. Hood Community College), who led Pepperdine with 23 points in Saturday's scrimmage. As a sophomore at Mt. Hood Community College, Barlow contributed 19.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and five assists a contest.

Highly-regard freshman point guard Michael Gerrity (Yorba Linda, Calif. / Mater Dei HS), also added 23 points and six rebounds in the scrimmage. Gerrity averaged 19.5 points, 5.5 assists and three steals a game as a senior.

Pepperdine will hold closed door practices until its first exhibition game against Biola at Firestone Fieldhouse on Wednesday, November 9, beginning at 7 p.m. The Waves will hold scrimmages each Saturday at 1 p.m. that will be open to the public.
