MALIBU, Calif. - The first visit by one of the old Pacific-10 Conference schools in almost a decade highlights the Pepperdine men's basketball team's non-conference schedule, which second-year head coach Marty Wilson announced today.

With one preseason exhibition, five non-conference games and eight West Coast Conference matchups, the Waves will play 14 times in Firestone Fieldhouse in all, including a Sunday, November 16 battle against Washington State. Pepperdine will also make a number of non-conference road trips to such places as the Bay Area, Houston, Hawai'i and New Orleans.

"It's an exciting schedule, an exciting challenge," Wilson said. "There's a good balance with some high-major teams, some talented, athletic and disciplined teams. Our schedule will test our staff and our team. We want to put our guys into situations where we can battle, fight through some adversity, get some wins and prepare us for when league starts.

"The Washington State game is a big deal for a home game, it's against a marquee team and a Pac-12 opponent, and that's our first game. We want to get our student support and community support behind us and try to build on that."

The non-conference schedule, with notes about each regular-season opponent, is as follows:

Saturday, November 3, exhibition vs. Cal Lutheran in Firestone Fieldhouse

Friday, November 9, at Cal State Northridge -Pepperdine leads the all-time series, 8-7, but the Matadors have won the last four in a row, including a 73-70 victory in Firestone Fieldhouse last season. The Waves' last win in the series came at home in 2005-06, and their last win at the Matadome was in 1995-96. The Waves' season will begin on the road for the second time in three years.

Tuesday, November 13, at California -The Waves and Golden Bears have only met once before, a 61-58 Cal victory that took place as part of the Office Depot Golden Bear Classic during the 2004-05 season. California played in the First Four of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Friday, November 16, vs. Washington State in Firestone Fieldhouse -This is the first time one of the old Pac-10 teams will play in Firestone Fieldhouse since Oregon visited in December 2002 (Utah and Colorado played here in recent years before they joined the Pac-12). WSU beat the Waves last season, 67-56, in the annual Cougar Hardwood Classic played in Seattle, and holds a 3-2 edge in the all-time series. The Cougars went on to reach the final of the 2012 College Basketball Invitational postseason tournament.

Tuesday, November 20, at Houston Baptist -This will be the first time the Waves and the Huskies will meet. It's the second straight year Pepperdine will make a road trip to Texas (the Waves won at Texas-San Antonio last season).

Saturday, November 24, vs. UC Irvine in Firestone Fieldhouse -Pepperdine and UCI are tied 10-10 in the all-time series and will meet for the ninth time in the last 12 years. The schools didn't play last year, but the Waves won 76-69 at home in the last encounter during the 2010-11 season.

Thursday, November 29, at Montana State -A two-game road trip will begin in Bozeman, Mont., where the Waves last played in the 2007-08 season. The all-time series is tied 3-3, with Pepperdine earning a 59-36 home victory last season.

Saturday, December 1, at Utah Valley -The second game of the road trip pits the Waves against the Wolverines for the first time.

Wednesday, December 5, vs. UC Riverside in Firestone Fieldhouse -Despite both schools being located in Southern California, the Waves and the Highlanders haven't met since 1977-78. Pepperdine won the first three games in the series, with UCR winning the most recent one.

Saturday, December 8, at Hawai'i -Pepperdine heads across the Pacific for the first time since December 2009 when the squad participated in the Rainbow Classic, though this time it's just for one game. The Waves beat the Rainbow Warriors last season in Malibu, 73-67, though Hawai'i has a 6-4 edge in the all-time series.

Sunday, December 16, vs. Central Michigan in Firestone Fieldhouse -The Chippewas will be headed to Malibu for the second year in a row. Last year, CMU earned a 67-57 victory in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Wednesday-Thursday, December 19-20, at the Tulane Classic -Pepperdine will visit New Orleans for a four-team tournament with host Tulane, Alabama State and Texas-Pan American. The Waves have never played Tulane or Alabama State and are 1-0 all-time against UTPA.

Friday or Saturday, December 28 or 29 - The Waves expect to add a final non-conference home game on one of these dates in the near future.
