Pepperdine Wins 97-93 Overtime Thriller At Santa Clara Thursday Night
Feb. 17, 2005
Freshman guard Kingsley Costain scored eight of his career-high 21 points in overtime to lead Pepperdine to a 97-93 victory over Santa Clara in a West Coast Conference (WCC) game Thursday night at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara.
Senior forward Glen McGowan, who registered a double-double with a game-high 27 points and 13 rebounds, scored the final nine points of the second half for Pepperdine (15-12, 5-7) but his missed free throw with 14 seconds remaining prevented the Waves from winning in regulation. McGowan also missed two free throws midway through overtime but came back later to make two before his dunk helped seal the win.
In overtime, Costain scored the Waves' first eight points as they took a 90-88 lead with 1:16 remaining. His three-pointer less than 10 seconds into overtime gave Pepperdine a lead it would not relinquish.
Kyle Bailey led five Santa Clara players in double figures with 23 points, all but two coming after halftime, including six 3-pointers. He also missed an off-balance jumper at the end of regulation that would have given the Broncos the win.
Travis Niesen added 18 points and Doron Perkins had 14 points and eight rebounds for Santa Clara (13-13, 6-5).
Pepperdine led 41-34 at the half but couldn't shake Santa Clara, which came back from five points down with less than five minutes left to force overtime. Bailey and Niesen helped rally the Broncos, combining for 10 points down the stretch, and Perkins added a key three-point play with 34 seconds left to force overtime.
The Waves were out-rebounded 46-36 but turned the ball over just 11 times while forcing 19 turnovers.
Pepperdine closes out its road schedule on Saturday when it visits Saint Mary's at McKeon Pavilion beginning at 7 p.m.
