MALIBU, Calif. - Senior forward Taylor Darby of the Pepperdine men's basketball team was honored for both his work on the court and in the classroom today, as he was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District first team.

Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) will now have the opportunity to be on the ballot for Academic All-American honors.

Darby, an integrated marketing communications major, is averaging a team-high 11.9 points for the Waves along with 6.0 rebounds and 1.1 blocks. In the West Coast Conference, he ranks 13th in scoring, 10th in rebounding and tied for eighth in blocked shots. Back on Jan. 19, he became the eighth Wave to start 100 career games since the stat was first kept in 1972-73. Darby came into this season averaging 6.7 points for his career.

He earned WCC All-Academic first team honors the last two years and following his junior season he was named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar and to the NABC Honors Court.

To be considered for Academic All-District or All-American honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.3 grade-point average, be a significant contributor to a team, have participated in 50 percent of a team's competitions and be at least a sophomore in terms of eligibility.

District 8 consists of schools from Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada. The five-member all-district first team had two players from the WCC, with Saint Mary's Matthew Dellavedova joining Darby. The other three were Wil Carter of San Jose State, Trent Lockett of Arizona State and Darin Mahoney of Weber State.

Darby is the fourth Wave to earn Academic All-District honors this school year, joining Kim Hill of the women's volleyball team and Laura Cole and Karissa Garcia of the women's soccer team.

Pepperdine visits rival Loyola Marymount in a Wells Fargo PCH Cup game tonight (Thursday, Feb. 2) at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised by Prime Ticket and there will be an audio broadcast and live game blog/chat at www.pepperdinesports.com.
