Dec. 4, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's basketball team couldn't keep its run of strong shooting performances going on Wednesday night and the result was a 78-64 home loss to Cal State Fullerton.
After setting a Great Alaska Shootout record last week by shooting 60% from the field over three games, the Waves (5-4) managed to make just 40% of their shots tonight. The Titans (3-6) snapped a five-game losing streak thanks to a 50.8% success rate.
Senior forward Brendan Lane (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin HS/UCLA) had another strong night, scoring a game-high 24 points on 10-for-17 shooting. But the rest of the starting lineup went just 8-for-31 (25.9%), and the rest of the team combined shot 14-for-43 (32.6%).
Pepperdine fared well in the first half despite shooting 42.4%. After the Waves trailed by six points early, Lane scored the first seven points of a 9-0 run to put Pepperdine in front 15-12. The Waves took their largest lead of eight points at 37-29 after a three-pointer by freshman guard Lamond Murray Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif./Bishop Montgomery HS), and went into halftime with a 37-32 lead.
But Cal State Fullerton quickly took the lead in the second half and kept ahold of its advantage for the final 15 minutes. It was just a three-point game with 7 1/2 minutes to play but a 10-2 run pushed the Titans' lead to 66-55 with 3:59 to play. Cal State Fullerton shot 17-for-30 (56.7%) after halftime while the Waves were only 10-for-27 (37.0%) as the Titans outscored the Waves 46-27 in the second half.
Freshman guard Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) added 10 points and four assists. Junior guard Malcolm Brooks (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lamar CC) had seven points and five assists, and senior forward Malte Kramer (Frieburg, Germany/Cuesta JC) also had seven points. Sophomore forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) was held to five points, though he had a team-high eight rebounds.
Sophomore forward Jett Raines (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS), who missed the first eight games of the season with a hand injury, made his season debut and had four points and two rebounds in seven minutes.
Cal State Fullerton's Marquis Horne had a career-high 21 points, 15 of which came after halftime. Michael Williams, a transfer from San Francisco, scored all 12 of his points in the second half.
Pepperdine faces another Big West Conference school on Saturday (Dec. 7) when the Waves visit UC Irvine for a 7 p.m. game. There will be an audio-only broadcast via WaveCasts at www.pepperdinesports.com with Al Epstein on the call.
