MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's basketball team made a run, but a big second-half comeback fell short in an 86-78 loss to Santa Clara in the West Coast Conference regular-season finale.

A 29-3 run over the final four-plus minutes of the first half and the first four-plus minutes of the second half put the Broncos (13-18, 6-12 WCC) ahead by 27 points. The Waves (15-15, 8-10 WCC) got the deficit down to six points in the final minutes but couldn't finish the comeback.

Pepperdine had no answer for Jared Brownridge, who scored an SCU freshman-record 38 points, including 7-for-9 on three-pointers. Four of those threes came during the decisive run.

Sophomore forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) led the Waves with 18 points and nine rebounds. Playing in their final home games, seniors Brendan Lane (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin HS/UCLA) and Malte Kramer (Freiburg, Germany/Cuesta CC) scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. Junior guard Malcolm Brooks (Brooklyn, N.Y./Cardozo HS/Lamar CC) added 12 points.

The Waves' last lead came at 16-14 after two free throws by freshman guard Amadi Udenyi (Oakland, Calif./De La Salle HS/St. Thomas More Prep). Santa Clara then went ahead 27-19, but Lane had six points in a 10-3 run that pulled Pepperdine within one point at 30-29 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the half.

The Broncos then outscored the Waves 17-2 the rest of the way, and Santa Clara went into the break with a 47-31 advantage. SCU opened the second half on a 12-1 run, making the score 59-32 with 15:48 to play.

The Waves finally started to turn things around, and got back into the game by holding the Broncos to just 28.6% shooting for the second half (8-for-28).

Kramer started and ended a 9-0 run with three-pointers, making it a 10-point game at 66-56 with 6:45 left. A three-pointer by Brooks made it a single-digit game at 68-59 with six minutes to play.

Davis would later score five straight points, cutting the Broncos' advantage to six at 75-69 with 1:27 left. But SCU would go 11-for-12 from the free throw line from that point on to earn the victory.

Pepperdine ended up outshooting Santa Clara, 44.6% to 42.9%. But the Broncos had big advantage in points off turnovers (27-14) and points in the paint (36-20).

Despite the result, Pepperdine had already clinched the #5 seed at the upcoming WCC Championships. The Waves will play either Saint Mary's or San Francisco next Saturday (March 8) at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Game times and television broadcast information will be announced on Monday. There will be audio-only WaveCasts at PepperdineSports.com with Al Epstein on the call.
