SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga has only lost twice in 2014, and the Pepperdine men's basketball team has had the misfortune of facing a motivated Bulldog team immediately after both of those losses. On Thursday night, the Waves suffered an 83-68 road defeat in West Coast Conference play.

The Waves (14-12, 7-7 WCC) were within four points on two occasions midway through the second half, but the Bulldogs (22-4, 12-1 WCC), ranked 24th in the USA Today coaches poll, had a strong finish to maintain their big lead atop the conference standings.

Sophomore forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points. Senior forward Brendan Lane (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin HS/UCLA) and senior guard Nikolas Skouen (Bergen, Norway/Pratt CC) both scored 12 points and junior guard Malcolm Brooks (Brooklyn, N.Y./Cardozo HS/Lamar CC) added 11.

Pepperdine trailed at halftime 42-34 despite outshooting Gonzaga 51.7% to 50.0%. But the Bulldogs made six of their first seven three-pointers and had a big edge on the boards.

The Waves' last lead was at 13-12 after a lay-up by Skouen. Gonzaga then made three straight three-pointers to open up a 21-13 advantage. It was just a four-point game at 26-22 after a basket by Brooks, but the Bulldogs would go up by as many as 11 before settling for an eight-point lead at the break.

Gonzaga began the second half on an 8-2 run to pull ahead 50-36 with under 17 minutes to play. The Waves eventually closed the gap to four points at 54-50 with 12:42 to play after a three-point play by sophomore forward Jett Raines (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) and a jumper by Skouen.

It was a four-point game again at 59-55 with 10:40 to go after Davis finished a three-point play. Then, with Gonzaga leading by six at 63-57, the Bulldogs put the game away with a 9-0 run (with seven of the points coming from Przemek Karnowski). They went up 72-57 with seven minutes left and kept the lead in double-figures the rest of the way.

Gonzaga's second-half shooting rose to 56.0%, while the Waves fell to 41.4% after halftime. For the game, the Bulldogs had a 52.5% to 46.6% edge in shooting, plus made more three-pointers (10 to three) and had advantages in rebounding (36-29) and turnovers (13-9).

David Stockton and Kevin Pangos each scored 18 points to lead Gonzaga, while Karnowski recorded 11 of his 17 points in the second half.

Pepperdine continues its road trip at Portland on Saturday (Feb. 15) at 1 p.m. It's the WCC Game of the Week and it will be on Time Warner Cable SportsNet locally. There will also be a free audio broadcast via WaveCasts at PepperdineSports.com with Al Epstein on the call.
