PROVO, Utah - Brigham Young rediscovered its long-distance shooting touch at the expense of the Pepperdine men's basketball team, and the visiting Waves suffered an 86-48 defeat on Saturday night in West Coast Conference play.

The Cougars (21-6, 9-3) became the first team to score 80 points against the Waves (8-17, 2-12) this season with the help of 12 three-pointers. BYU had made just 12 three-pointers in its previous five WCC games.

The Waves shot just 33.3% from the field, while the Cougars cooled off toward the end and finished at 41.5% for the game. Nearly half (32 of 65) of BYU's shots came from behind the arc.

"It was tough. They shot the ball well. That's something they hadn't been doing very well," Pepperdine Coach Marty Wilson said. "We wanted to challenge them, but they hit some early and it got contagious. The crowd got into it and it was tough for us to try to stop the bleeding."

Senior forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) and freshman forward Ramon Eaton (Sacramento, Calif./Sheldon HS) each scored eight points to lead the Waves.

Pepperdine committed 17 turnovers to BYU's 12, and the Cougars capitalized to the tune of a 23-8 edge in points-off-turnovers.

BYU led at halftime 46-25 and then started the second half on a 21-4 run.

All 10 Cougars that saw action scored, led by Charles Abouo's 23 points and 12 rebounds. Six different BYU players hit three-pointers.

Pepperdine next has a non-conference game at Seattle on Thursday (Feb. 16) at 7:10 p.m. Al Epstein's audio broadcast and a live interactive blog/chat can be found at www.pepperdinesports.com. Then, the Waves have their home finale next Saturday (Feb. 18) against Portland at 7 p.m. Pepperdine's seniors will be honored during the pregame, and former head coach Jim Harrick will be recognized during a halftime ceremony. The game will be televised by Prime Ticket.
