Jan. 12, 2013
The Toreros (10-8, 3-0 WCC) posted big advantages in points off turnovers (26-12) and second-chance points (22-12) and held the Waves (9-8, 1-3 WCC) to their lowest point total of the season.
The Waves were coming off a 51-point performance at BYU that saw them score a season-low 16 second-half points. The offensive struggles continued into tonight, as Pepperdine had a season-low 18 first-half points.
Freshman forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) had nine points and six rebounds, and senior guard Lorne Jackson (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) had nine points, six assists and four steals to lead the Waves.
Pepperdine, which never led in the contest, outshot the Toreros, 41.9% to 40.8% overall, but committed 18 turnovers to USD's 14.
The key stretch of the game came in the first half when the Toreros held the Waves scoreless for nearly 8 1/2 minutes. Freshman forward Jett Raines (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) hit a jumper to cut USD's lead to 12-10 with 12:41 to play, but Pepperdine didn't score again until 4:17 remained in the half when Davis grabbed an offensive rebound and scored. In the meantime, USD had rattled off 11 straight points to take a 23-12 lead.
The Toreros went ahead 27-18 at the break and after halftime, USD's lead grew to as many as 15 points on three occasions. Pepperdine cut the deficit to six points twice, at 45-39 with 5:23 left and at 47-41 with 4:48 left, but couldn't get any closer as the Toreros' Johnny Dee scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the final 5:03.
Pepperdine lost for the first time in 10 games this season when allowing 66 points or fewer.
