John Impelman, now an assistant coach, will be in his fifth season at Pepperdine in 2013-14.
John Impelman is in his sixth season working at Pepperdine in 2014-15 and is in his second year as an assistant coach.
Impelman was promoted to assistant coach prior to the 2013-14 season. He served as the team's director of operations in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. He previously worked with the team in 2008-09 and 2009-10 as the team operations assistant/video coordinator while he was earning a master's degree in American Studies, which he completed in December 2010.
"I am extremely excited to have John return to the Pepperdine family," said head coach Marty Wilson in March 2011. "John is a relentless worker and has great passion and energy that will allow him to be successful. His family's basketball roots are very valuable to building and cultivating relationships that will positively help build our basketball program."
Upon Impelman's promotion in May 2013, Wilson said: "John has worked alongside of me for four of the last five years and has shown himself to be a tireless worker who is very loyal and committed. He understands the entire culture that we are building here and has had both feet in since day one. He has always taken on more responsibility than he was given and has completed his tasks with great efficiency. He brings a great attitude that lifts up our basketball staff and team, and I am glad to say that he will continue to make our program better."
During the 2011-12 season, Impelman took on double-duty and filled in as an assistant coach when a spot opened up midway through the season.
In between jobs at Pepperdine, Impelman worked as the Director of Operations at Double Pump Inc. in Northridge, Calif., in 2010-11. Double Pump is widely known as running some of the premier club basketball teams and tournaments in the nation.
Impelman graduated from Occidental in May 2008 with a degree in sociology. He was a four-year letterman who was part of squads that won SCIAC titles in 2007 and 2008 and went to three NCAA Division III Tournaments.
He has worked at several local camps for many years, including as a coach at Tom Asbury's and Ben Howland's camps in 2009 and at the Pacific Coast Basketball Camp from 2003-08. He was a camp counselor for the Double Pump West Coast All-Star Camp in 2009, and helped manage one of the sites of the Double Pump Best of Summer Tournament, a major summer club competition.
A native of Huntington Beach, Calif., he attended Ocean View High School. His father, Craig Impelman, was an assistant coach at Pepperdine for two seasons (1979-80 and 1980-81) along with Asbury under Jim Harrick. His great-grandfather is the late UCLA coaching legend John Wooden.
He is married (his wife's name is Katie).
