TAINAN CITY, Taiwan - The Pepperdine baseball team used a seven run third inning to defeat Dongguk University (Korea) 13-4 Saturday afternoon and win the 2013 Formosa Cup with a 3-0 record. The Waves fell behind 3-0 early in the game, but exploded for their largest run output of the tournament to take the title.

Pepperdine defeated tournament host Chinese Cultural University (Taiwan) 5-4 on a walk-off hit in the opening game, then took down Jobu University (Japan) Friday, 5-3. All three teams the Waves faced at the tournament were their countries' defending national champions.

Nick Costello (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) and Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) helped erase the early deficit and even the game at 3-3 in the second inning with RBI and then the Pepperdine offense took over. Pitcher Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) helped his own cause with a two-run single to kick off the scoring before the Waves tallied seven runs on five hits.

Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) recorded his seventh and eighth RBI of the tournament with a flare into left in the inning and Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) hit an RBI single. Pepperdine also drew a pair of bases loaded walks in the frame.

Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) added a two-run single through the left side later in the game.

Brown went five innings giving up four runs on four hits and four different pitchers combined to toss the final four innings and preserve the win.

Dongguk lost its opening game to Jobu 6-0, but came back to defeat Chinese Cultural in extra innings last night, giving the Korean team a shot at still taking the title with a win Saturday. The Waves put those hopes to rest quickly with their most impressive win of the tournament, though. Jobu and Chinese Cultural close the tournament with a Saturday night game, followed by the closing ceremony where the Waves will receive their championship trophy.
