Baseballl: Waves Sign Austin Bernard to NLI
Nov. 21, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. --- Pepperdine Head Coach Steve Rodriguez announced the signing of middle infielder Austin Bernard to a National Letter of Intent this week. Bernard is a 5-10 right-hander hailing from Valley Center HS in Valley Center, Calif.
Playing four years under head coach Ron Sisler at Valley Center, Bernard was an All-Valley League first team selection, hitting .344 with three homers, 33 total hits and 23 stolen bases in 2013. Bernard was also named to the San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic team.
“Austin reminds us of former WCC MVP Joe Sever,” said Rodriguez. “He could be an offensive weapon in the coming years. Austin gave up a tremendous high school football career to focus on baseball, so we can’t wait to see how he grows while only playing baseball. We are excited to have his bat in the middle of our line up for the next few years.”
Bernard is ranked in the top 500 nationally by Perfect Game and is the third ranked second baseman in California by the publication.
Bernard played travel ball with the San Diego Show in 2013 and also played for both the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays scout teams.
As a two-sport athlete, Bernard earned All-Valley League first team and All-CIF second team honors in football. He earned his second All-Academic team award of 2013 as a football player as well.
“I chose Pepperdine because of the excellent academics and the opportunity to play Division I baseball,” said Bernard of why he chose to come to Malibu. Bernard plans on majoring in business.
