Waves Baseball Signs Five to National Letters of Intent

MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine baseball signed five from the class of 2012 to National Letters of Intent last week. Leading the class is infielder Trey Williams from Valencia High School. The Waves also added infielder Cody Nulph of Orange Lutheran. The class also features two pitchers in left-hander Jayson Balades of Oxnard High School and right-handed pitcher Jackson McClleland of Redlands East Valley and two-way player Devin Carte rout of Temecula Valley High School.

Williams, a six-foot-one infielder signed with the Waves after a stellar junior season, in which he batted .345 with nine home runs and 20 RBI. In the final 11 games of the season he batted .500 with six home runs. The son of former Major Leaguer Eddie Williams, he was a teammate of current Waves freshman Quincy Quintero at Valencia High School. According to Perfect Game USA Williams is the 11th-best high school prospect and Baseball America has him ranked 13th. His junior year accolades include Perfect Game All-American, Jackie Robinson Award Finalist and All-SVC Baseball first team. As a sophomore in 2010 he was named the Foothill League and All-Santa Clarita Valley baseball player of the year. He was also named to the CalHiSports All-Underclass State team and was an All-CIF Southern Section Division I first-teamer. He batted .388 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI in 2010. Williams is considered one of the top prospects in southern California and is a highly ranked MLB prospect with an impressive swing and bat speed.

Left-hander Balades, a native of Port Hueneme, Calif., is also a former teammate of a current Wave, as he played his high school ball at Oxnard with Austin Davidson. The 5-foot-10 Balades is a three-year varsity letterwinner, who as a 2011 junior, had 7-2 record with 81 strikeouts in 64 innings. He threw three shutouts and finished three games with 10 or more strikeouts. For his efforts he was named First Team All-Pacific View League and Second Team All-Ventura County. His sophomore year accolades include being named second team All-CIF, Second Team All-League and earning Oxnard High's Cy-Young Award. As a freshman he was named honorable mention All-Pacific View League and Oxnard High's Best Pitcher. Balades is also active in USA Baseball, making the USA Baseball NTIS Southern California Team in 2010 and 2011. In 2010 he was invited to the 16U National Trials.

A two-way player, Carter is set to join the Waves in 2012. The Temecula, Calif. native is a 6-foot-1 outfielder/right-handed pitcher from Temecula Valley High School. As an outfielder, he played in 25 games, hitting .286 with six home runs and 20 RBI. He also logged 22 innings in 11 appearances on the mound, tallying 13 strikeouts and two saves. He earned honorable mention All-Southwestern League accolades last season.

6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher McClelland of Beaumont, Calif., will be another addition to the Waves' pitching staff. McClelland is a three-year varsity letterwinner at Redlands East Valley High School, where he was named First Team All-Citrus Belt League as a 2011 junior. He finished with an ERA of 1.53 and a record of 7-1. He is also very accomplished in the classroom, as he will finish with a cumulative GPA of 3.7, is a three-time Scholar Athlete and has twice been named Student of the Quarter.

Infielder Nulph of Orange, Calif. rounds out the class. The 5-foot-11 shortstop from Orange Lutheran High School is a four-year varsity starter and was named first team All-Trinity league as a sophomore and second team as a freshman. As a 2011 junior Nulph batted .271 with seven RBI on 16 hits in 18 games played.

Of his 2012 recruiting class, Head Coach Steve Rodriguez says, "This is a very talented, athletic group. It's a smaller class, but it will fill many of our immediate needs for the future. These are great young men, and I am looking forward to seeing them all in Waves uniforms."
